Webinar on Transitioning to Animal-Free Cell Culture Media in India

PETA Science Consortium International e.V. member PETA India presents a free webinar on non-animal replacements for foetal bovine serum (FBS) in cell culture media. The webinar, featuring industry representatives developing and optimising serum-free/chemically defined media, will provide an overview of the evolving landscape supporting the transition to animal-free chemically defined cell culture media, the scientific and ethical motivations for replacing FBS, practical guidance on the availability of serum-free/chemically defined media, and strategies to transition cells.

Transitioning to animal-free cell culture media provides an opportunity to enhance reproducibility, reliability, and scalability across fields such as in vitro research and testing, cultivated meat production, and vaccine development and batch testing. This is reflected in a draft general chapter released by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) for stakeholder consultation that supports the use of non-animal replacements for FBS and other animal-derived products that are commonly used to manufacture human vaccines. When finalised, this policy will add IPC to the growing list of global regulatory and scientific bodies that support the use of chemically defined, animal-free media in cell culture.
