Aquatic Toxicity and Bioaccumulation

Efforts have focused on reducing and replacing the use of fish in regulatory aquatic toxicity and bioaccumulation testing, including projects co-led by PETA Science Consortium International e.V. Click the boxes below to read more about these efforts:

The Science Consortium co-organises a webinar series on the use of new approach methodologies (NAMs) in ecotoxicology with the European Medicines Agency, the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan), the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the US Food and Drug Administration.

In addition, the Science Consortium promotes the development and use of non-animal approaches to aquatic toxicity testing by regularly presenting and organising sessions at scientific conferences. For example, the Science Consortium co-organised a session on non-animal methods linking human and environmental health at the 2025 EUROTOX Congress and ecotoxicity sessions at several European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EUSAAT) congresses. These EUSAAT sessions featured developments in the use of computational methods, fish cell lines, and primary cells for the prediction of toxicity, bioaccumulation, and metabolism. The Science Consortium also co-organised a session on predictive methods and alternative approaches to fish toxicity testing at the 11th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences in 2021. The Science Consortium has previously supported the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) as a global affiliate and continues to participate in the SETAC Animal Alternatives Interest Group.
