Canada releases strategy on incorporating New Approach Methods in regulatory risk assessment

Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada have released a strategy on the use of new approach methods (NAMs) for risk assessment of chemicals. The strategy is implemented under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), which recognises the importance of replacing the use of vertebrate toxicity tests with non-animal methods that protect human health and the environment.

The strategy consists of five key areas to promote the use of NAMs:

  • Identifying NAMs that can fulfil data needs for regulatory decision-making
  • Developing and gaining confidence in the use of NAMs
  • Harmonizing the acceptance and use of NAMs through domestic and international collaborations
  • Engaging stakeholders to ensure transparency, gather input, and communicate progress
  • Implementing NAMs under CEPA and other Canadian regulatory programs
