Early-Career Scientist Award to Attend 12th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences

PETA Science Consortium International e.V. is offering a travel award to attend the 12th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences in Niagara Falls, Canada, from 27 to 31 August 2023.

This award will give an early-career scientist the opportunity to share and learn about efforts to replace the use of animals in the life sciences. The 2023 World Congress, themed “3Rs Over the Edge: Regulatory Acceptance and Next-Gen Education”, brings together stakeholders from across academia, government, industry, and non-profit sectors.

The deadline to apply for this award is  31 March 2023, and the recipient will be announced in April 2023.

The Award

  • The Science Consortium will select an early-career scientist based on their dedication and work towards advancing non-animal scientific methods.
  • The Science Consortium will reimburse the recipient’s registration fees and expenses for travel to and from and accommodation at the 12th World Congress. See below for details.
  • In the event that the 12th World Congress is cancelled or moved to be held virtually, the award may be cancelled or modified.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be studying to pursue a career in research or toxicology.
  • Early-career scientists are defined as the following: (1) Students working towards their master’s or PhD who have completed their first year of study, (2) Postdoctoral fellows, or (3) Scientists less than five years out of a master’s, PhD, or postdoctoral programme.
  • Applicants must have submitted a poster or presentation to the 12th World Congress before applying for this award.
  • Open to residents of any country. Must be 18 or older. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law. By applying, you are acknowledging that you have read and that you agree to our contest terms and conditions and privacy policy.

Award Recipient Requirements

The recipient must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Attend all five days of the 12th World Congress (Reimbursement is contingent upon this requirement.)
  • Participate in a brief meet-and-greet with Consortium scientists at the 12th World Congress
  • Provide a headshot within one week of receiving notification from the Science Consortium that they have been selected for the award (This does not factor into the selection of the awardee but will be used on Science Consortium and member organisation websites and social media.)
  • Register for the 12th World Congress by 1 May 2023 in order to receive the early-bird registration rate. The registration fees to attend the 12th World Congress will be reimbursed. The recipient must submit their registration receipt for reimbursement.
  • Book their own travel and hotel accommodation to attend the 12th World Congress in Niagara Falls, Canada. Receipts are required for reimbursement of these costs for airfare (up to US$600 round trip for US and Canadian recipients or up to US$1,000 round trip for all other recipients; economy seating only) and hotel accommodation (up to US$750 total). Receipts must be submitted to the Science Consortium by 27 August 2023. The Science Consortium will reimburse the recipient within one month of receiving and approving the receipts.
  • Assume responsibility for all other expenses not noted above (including but not limited to meals, beverages, gratuities, incidentals, optional excursions, personal expenses, and travel insurance). The recipient is responsible for obtaining and paying for any documents required to travel, including a passport if travelling internationally. There will be no reimbursement for travel expenses if documents related to travel are not received in time.
  • Submit to the Science Consortium a 250- to 500-word summary of their experience at the conference by 22 September 2023
